The Changan Ford Racing Team braved challenging conditions with a strong performance in Zhuhai to kickstart its 2017 China Touring Car Championship campaign at qualifying earlier today. Andy Yan, who was third in the Driver’s Championship last season, sped around the 4.3km track on a rain soaked afternoon to secure second place on the starting grid tomorrow for round 1 of the double header, with the green flag dropping at 8:43am.

Long time captain Rainey He followed close behind in sixth, while Martin Cao, who encountered a slight mechanical problem, came home in 16th place. Daniel Lloyd, making his debut with Changan Ford Racing team, should be encouraged by his run today, which was good enough to place him 10th on the grid for tomorrow’s race.

Brian Ma, Changan Ford Racing Team’s Technical Director, said:

“I think our drivers performed at a high level today given the wet and slippery conditions. Andy was well positioned to get the fastest lap when the track was at its best, but just missed the golden opportunity right before further downpour, meaning he had to be conservative on the usual fast corners. Rainey was his consistent self, while Martin was a little unlucky but the mechanical issue with his car is minor so we will get that fixed this evening, he will be ready to challenge for points tomorrow for the team.”

“We are delighted to welcome Daniel to our team and very proud of his run today. It took him a little while to get used to our car and obviously it’s a steep learning curve for him being in CTCC and Zhuhai International Circuit for the first time. But he did a very good job today despite limited track time and tricky conditions. We look forward to see him showing us his true pace tomorrow,” Ma added.
